With many parts of the United Kingdom being left frozen and almost impossible to reach due to freezing weather conditions over the Christmas period, many homes were left with little or not heating oil supplies. Thousands of customers were left unreachable because of the extremely hazardous road conditions and oil suppliers were completely unprepared for the way the weather hit many parts of the country.
The cold winter months are already a really tough time for many pensioners around the country. But there could be deadly consequences if they were to be left for any length of time with no oil. The cold weather left hundreds of homes without oil for over a month even though they had placed their orders for oil before the cold weather had hit.
Mrs Clare Stott, 87, from Woodstock was one of those pensioners left without oil. With oil delivery trucks unable to reach her, she found that the order she placed before the snow even began to fall could not be filled. She could have found herself in serious bother if not for kind neighbour Chris Pomfrett. He kindly managed to get a 25 litre barrel of oil for Mrs. Stott to keep her going. However, Mrs. Stott’s case is not a one off and there are thousands of rural customers who are facing similar problems. The weather has made it nearly impossible for deliveries to get to customers.
Mr. Pomfrett actually runs an oil buying group which offers customers discounts on oil. The business is a not for profit business which is responsible for allowing some customers to access cheaper oil prices. He has said that he feels that some more vulnerable oil customers were not helped by their oil companies. It was his opinion that these companies could have gotten small supplies to their most needy customers with the use of 4×4 trucks.
It is not only pensioners who have been suffering due to delays in oil deliveries. Many homes with newborns and those will sick people really should not be without oil during these harsh conditions. However the oil companies have stated that they are doing their very best to get oil to their most needy customers.
Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Fuel such as electricity and gas show no signs of coming down in price. Many individuals are now changing over to cheaper home heating oil though. When they do they always need their tanks filled with cheap heating oil to ensure they never run out.
