A popular solution to watch analogue and digital TV is with satellite systems. The sky is full of satellites and Free to Air channels that, depending on your location does not need a huge dish. The most viewed satellites inside Europe are Hotbird and Astra, these sends out lots of FTA channels in different languages, such as Italian, German and Russian. Or maybe looking for something else, there is a lot to watch.
So for a small dish, a DiSEqC motor would be a good option. 36v actuators and H to H motors are stronger built, can handle higher wind loads and move larger dishes, these use their own power source via the receivers built-in 36v positioner. However most receivers don’t have a positioner built-in but in this situation you could use a thing called VBox. One advantage of this is the satellite positions are stored in it instead of in the receiver. All the motors are designed to do the same thing, to track the geostationary satellite arc within 180 degrees radius. It is not possible to go further as the remaining satellites would be below the horizon as in invisible. Before mounting dish, its a good preparation to plan where to install the dish so fences or buildings are not blocking sight to the satellites you want to receive. This can often cause complications with low elevation satellites. The only limit now is the size of dish. Visit Lyngsat to find out what dish diameter you need in your location for any targeted satellite. The larger size dish you have, the more channels you can tune in. There is also the option of subscribing to packages from other satellites. Remember many channels have English audio tracks. There are choices like Sport, Movie and Music channels. To watch coded channels will however require the receiver can decode the encryption of the viewing card. Most receivers can handle multiple encryption systems.
On the many satellites there are also multiple bands, each operating in different frequencies. C-Band are lower frequencies and generally needs large dishes. Ku-Band which is the most used, works at higher frequency ranges. Both of these bands have Vertical and Horizontal (Linear), Left and Right (Circular) polarization. LNB’s are either Linear or Circular, you could still install them both on same dish if you mount the two LNB’s next to one another. If you choose to do this you must use a 2/1 DiSEqC switch, this will automatically tell the receiver which LNB to use for the type of signal. This way could also be an alternative to motorized systems, as you can catch multiple satellites on a fixed dish by using a serie of LNB’s. There are endless choices of satellite dishes, motors and receivers but don’t give up its not as difficult as you might think.
