Printers, like computers, come and go with the times. But unlike computers, printers don’t change by all that much. They did go from line by line printing to progressive printing and from a series of connected dots to a solid color image, but these days it’s simply a matter of a little faster or holding a bit more paper. The 4500 is a black and white model (or monochromatic) that’s designed for office printing. It prints relatively quickly as well, being a laser jet, so it’s perfect for those occasions when you need a hundred copies of a report, a hundred resumes, etc. It does its job for an office printer, but that’s it. It’s definitely obsolete if you’re looking to print photographs or heavily detail-oriented images.
What that means for a potential buyer is that you can’t get a new one. You can still get it used online or at some kind of electronics pawn shop though. But if you were planning on getting a new printer anyway, then a newer model would be better as their price is practically the same.
If you have the 4500, or are considering getting it, you’re probably getting it for office-related purposes anyway, which is why there are newer models out there such as the 4510 and 5550. All three models print in black and white, but the newer ones more than likely print faster or hold more paper, or have better Xerox printer toner cartridge , or something of that nature. Since the prices are relatively the same, it might be better to go new.
If you don’t really want to spend the money on a new one and just want to upgrade by smaller steps, then it should be a relief to know that the 4500 is upgradeable. You can buy various things for it, such as a bigger hard drive to increase the printing queue, and other such aspects that can be upgraded. Getting a few pieces to upgrade a few things may be cheaper than getting a brand new printer, so this may be the route you want to take.
At least replacing the old printer has been made a little easier by most companies with trade-in policies. They claim that if you want to trade in an older model printer for a newer one, they’ll take the older one and give you a discount towards your purchase. It may not be that much; in fact there’s no way of knowing exactly how much, so it may not be that great depending on your situation.
Regardless of what your situation is, though, most places claim they will find something to do with your older model, as a way of encouraging people to make the switch. And when it comes to getting a new printer, you’re more than likely not going to have a use for the old one. That being said, there’s not really much to lose, even if you don’t get much at all in the end.
Maybe you only need something basic, like the Xerox Phaser 4500 printer, so shopping for used versions might be best. Maybe you’re considering trading one in for a newer model, but aren’t sure if the transition is worth it. It comes down to each person’s basic printing needs. Offices aren’t usually picky, so long as the printer works. Chances are, it will get the job done just as any other printer would.
